City Rooms
Philadelphia Is a Custom-Cabinet City by Necessity

No American city punishes stock cabinetry like Philadelphia. Rowhome kitchens are narrow and specific; trinities barely have kitchens at all; and the grand rooms of Chestnut Hill and Mt. Airy deserve millwork that answers their original trim. Standard sizes solve none of these rooms. Built-to-the-inch solves all of them.

We have been building for Philadelphia houses for years, including a traditional family room, a master bathroom’s cabinetry, and a hand-carved Victorian fireplace surround, all in the city. The Philadelphia Historical Commission protects the city’s fabric for good reason; our work is built to belong inside it.

We serve Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy, Center City, Society Hill, Queen Village, Fishtown, Fairmount, and Roxborough, and we connect to the Main Line and Delaware County just outside the line.

“Rowhome kitchens are a game of inches, and the inches are all different. We once gained a full drawer bank by building the boxes around a chimney breast instead of boxing past it. That is what custom means in this city.”

What We Build
For the City’s Very Different Rooms

Rowhome Kitchens
Galley precision: every inch works, ventilation and storage engineered together. Start at custom kitchens.
Classic Northwest
Chestnut Hill and Mt. Airy rooms with original trim get inset doors and period profiles. See the luxury kitchens page.
Built-Ins
Alcoves, chimney breasts, and stair walls turned into bookcases and media walls.
Vanities
City bathrooms are small and specific. Our custom vanities are built to the half inch around real plumbing.
Bars
Basement and parlor bars with real presence: wine and bar cabinetry.
Nooks
Breakfast corners that seat four in a rowhome width: banquettes and nooks.

Practical Advice
City-Specific Lessons We Keep Relearning

1
Measure the stairs before the kitchen
In trinities and narrow rowhomes, access decides construction. We build units sized to the actual stair and door openings, which is a design constraint, not an installation surprise.
2
Go vertical
Twelve-foot parlor ceilings are storage waiting to happen. Full-height cabinetry with ladder access works; the logic is in our floor-to-ceiling guide.
3
Respect the party wall
Chimney breasts and party-wall irregularities are opportunities for built-ins, not obstacles. Some of our best city work wraps them.
4
Check permit and facade rules early
Historic districts have real rules; interior millwork is usually simple but openings are not. The Historical Commission’s guidance is public, the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia publishes practical homeowner resources, and your GC should know both cold.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Honestly, it depends on more variables than any web page can price: the wood species, the finish, the door style, how much of the room is cabinetry, and the condition of the walls we are building against. Two kitchens of the same size can land far apart. We explain the methodology in our kitchen cost guide, and the fastest way to a real number is a free consultation with your measurements.
Yes, and we design for the access from the first drawing. Units are sized to the staircase reality of the house, and our crew works clean in tight interiors.
Often. Fireplace surrounds, alcove bookcases, and media walls are perfect city projects: high impact, no gut renovation, days of installation.
Our problem, not yours. We schedule deliveries for the block’s reality, arrange permits where needed, and have done this in every quadrant of the city.
Yes. The hand-carved fireplace project shows the level of period work our shop can execute.

City Kitchens Are Our Kind of Puzzle
