Fireplace Built-Ins
& Custom Mantels

The fireplace is the one wall every room organizes itself around. We build the mantel, the surround, and the cabinetry that makes it architecture.

The Hearth Wall
One Wall Carries the Whole Room

Sofas point at it, mirrors hang over it, holidays gather around it. When the fireplace wall is right, the room needs almost nothing else; when it is a bare firebox in drywall, no amount of furniture rescues it. Mantel, surround, and flanking built-ins are one composition, and we design them as one.

Our fireplace work runs from a hand-carved Victorian surround in Philadelphia to the paneled wall of the timeless-warmth family room, with the range on display in our fireplace gallery. Different centuries of style, one standard of joinery.

Safety is not a style choice. Combustible mantels and shelves keep mandated distances from the firebox, and those clearances drive the design before any molding is drawn. The rules live in NFPA 211 at nfpa.org, and appliance-specific requirements are documented by the hearth industry at HPBA. We design to them from the first sketch, and your inspector will find nothing to discuss.

“Every fireplace wall has a proportion problem to solve before the pretty parts. Mantel height against ceiling height, shelf depth against firebox distance, cabinet height against the mantel. Get those triangles right and any style works. Get them wrong and no style survives.”

Ways We Build the Hearth Wall

Mantel and Surround Only
A new mantel with legs and shelf, sized to your firebox and ceiling. The fastest transformation per board foot in the house.
Flanking Built-Ins
Bookcases or cabinets on both sides, tied to the mantel with consistent reveals. See our bookcase page for the shelving side of the craft.
Full Paneled Wall
Floor-to-ceiling paneling with the firebox composed inside it. The formal answer, and the one old Philadelphia rooms ask for.
Media Over Mantel
Television integrated honestly: recessed, heat-shielded, at a watchable height. The full logic lives on our entertainment centers page.

Practical Advice
Before You Touch the Fireplace Wall

1
Know your firebox first
Wood-burning, gas insert, or electric changes every clearance and material rule. Bring the appliance model or a photo of the data plate; the design starts there, not at the mood board.
2
Decide about the television honestly
TV over the fire means compromises: viewing height, heat management, cable paths. Sometimes the honest answer is the TV on the adjacent wall and art over the mantel. We will draw both so you choose with eyes open.
3
Match the mantel scale to the ceiling
Eight-foot rooms want restraint; ten-foot rooms can carry a full crown build-up. A mantel copied from a taller room is the most common proportion mistake we repair.
4
Plan the interiors of the flanking cabinets
Games, chargers, firewood, bar bottles? Closed lowers hide it all, but only if drawers and outlets are planned before the wall is built, not after.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Honestly, it depends on more variables than any web page can price: the wood species, the finish, the door style, how much of the room is cabinetry, and the condition of the walls we are building against. Two kitchens of the same size can land far apart. We explain the methodology in our kitchen cost guide, and the fastest way to a real number is a free consultation with your measurements.
Yes, and it is a satisfying small project. We measure the firebox and clearances, then build and install a properly proportioned mantel, usually in a single visit.
Yes, at the correct distances, which are defined by code and by your specific appliance. We design to those clearances from the first drawing and detail the shield and offset solutions where a design pushes close.
Usually. A properly designed surround absorbs awkward existing trim, off-center flues, and uneven stone. Absorbing sins gracefully is most of what custom means.
Weekly. We scribe wood to fieldstone and brick as a matter of course; the meeting line between masonry and millwork is where hand fitting shows its worth.
