Modern Custom Kitchen in Towson, MD – Designed for Everyday Luxury

By Choice Custom Cabinetry & Design

Navy kitchens have been popular for a few years now, and it is easy to see why. The color is bold enough to make the room feel intentional, but dark enough to hide the wear that kitchens accumulate over time. When a family in Towson, Maryland came to us with a vision for a complete kitchen renovation, navy was their starting point. From there, every other decision flowed naturally.

This project is one of our favorites from the Baltimore County area. The combination of matte navy shaker cabinets, brushed brass hardware, white quartz countertops, and natural oak floors produces something that feels both modern and livable at the same time. Not a showroom kitchen that nobody wants to cook in, but a real kitchen that happens to look exceptional.

What Went Into This Kitchen

The layout centers on a large island that anchors the room and separates the cooking area from the casual seating and gathering space. Islands this size require careful structural planning: the base cabinets need to carry the weight of the quartz top, the seating overhang needs proper support, and the waterfall edge detail where the quartz wraps down the side has to be cut and fitted precisely.

Here is a breakdown of the key components:

  • Cabinetry: Full custom shaker-style doors in a matte navy finish. Full overlay construction. Soft-close hinges and drawer slides throughout.
  • Hardware: Brushed brass pulls and knobs. The warm metal tone against the cool navy creates contrast without competing.
  • Countertops: White quartz with a waterfall edge on the island. Quartz holds up well in active kitchens and does not require sealing the way natural stone does.
  • Lighting: Three matte black pendant lights positioned symmetrically above the island. The black ties back to the dark cabinet color while keeping the fixtures from feeling overly formal.
  • Flooring: Natural oak plank. The warm wood tone balances the cool navy and keeps the kitchen from feeling cold.
  • Appliances: Stainless steel professional-grade suite with double oven and a large refrigerator, integrated flush with the cabinet line.

Why These Choices Work Together

The navy and brass combination is popular right now, but it works here for a specific reason: the matte finish on the cabinets keeps the color from reading as too heavy. Glossy navy would dominate the room. Matte absorbs more light and sits quieter, which lets the brass hardware become the detail rather than the cabinet color itself.

The white quartz counters and the oak floor both do the same job from different directions: they lighten the space and add warmth so the room stays inviting even with the dark cabinetry. Remove either one and the kitchen tips toward feeling dark or formal. Together, they create balance.

The pantry in this project deserves its own mention. A lot of renovations put effort into the main kitchen and treat the pantry as an afterthought. In this home, the pantry got the same custom treatment: white inset cabinets, a black stone countertop, and floating wood shelves for open access. It is a working pantry designed to be used every day, not just to look organized for guests.

For a different take on a navy and coastal kitchen, see our Bright Coastal Sophistication project in Avalon, NJ, which uses a similar light-and-dark balance with very different results.

Custom Cabinetry for Maryland and Pennsylvania Homeowners

Our shop is based in Honey Brook, Pennsylvania, about an hour and a half from Towson. We regularly build and install custom cabinetry across Baltimore County, Howard County, and the greater Baltimore and Washington DC metro area, in addition to our core service area throughout Pennsylvania.

Maryland homes, particularly in Towson, Lutherville-Timonium, Cockeysville, and Hunt Valley, tend to blend traditional architecture with contemporary tastes. Older colonial and cape cod homes are being renovated with modern kitchens, and the challenge is creating something that feels updated without looking out of place in the rest of the house. That balance between traditional structure and modern detail is something our Amish craftsmen have been navigating for over 45 years.

If you are interested in what a custom kitchen might look like for your specific home and layout, our project gallery has a broad range of completed kitchens across different styles, finishes, and budgets.

For general inspiration on navy and dark kitchen palettes, Houzz has a large collection of navy kitchen photos that can help you develop your own direction before the design process begins.

How a Project Like This Comes Together

Clients who come to us from Maryland or out of state often have the same first question: how does this work logistically if your shop is in Pennsylvania?

The process is straightforward. We start with a design consultation, either at our Honey Brook showroom or, for larger projects, with a site visit to your home. We measure everything, talk through the design, and produce a detailed CAD drawing and 3D rendering before any wood is cut.

Once you approve the design, production takes place in our 20,000 sq ft facility in Honey Brook. We build every cabinet by hand, finish it in our dedicated finishing department, and inspect each piece before it leaves the shop. Installation is handled by our own crew, not a subcontractor. For a project in Towson or the Baltimore suburbs, that means a day trip each way, which we factor into the project timeline.

Total project time from approved design to completed installation is typically 8 to 12 weeks. You can read more about how we work and what to expect at each stage, or learn about the construction standards we hold ourselves to on every project.
